Primary Education in West Africa: Investment, Access, and Outcomes

Sub-Saharan Africa faces a profound learning crisis, with nine out of ten children unable to read and understand a simple text by age ten and the vast majority failing to reach minimum proficiency in reading and mathematics. Many children are in school but not learning, while millions remain out of school entirely. This visualization project uses UNESCO data to highlight key education indicators, including government spending, primary completion rates, out of school levels, and early grade reading proficiency. By visualizing these metrics in Power BI and Tableau, the project provides policymakers, educators, and stakeholders with evidence needed to identify gaps and design targeted interventions. The framing aims to promote informed action that strengthens foundational learning for children across the region.
