Chao Mbogho

I am a computer scientist, educator, and speaker from Kenya. I am the founder and lead of KamiLimu, a nonprofit education program, and I also lead responsible computing work in Kenya with the Mozilla Foundation.

I do not believe in only unlocking potential, but in opening the entire door. This philosophy has guided my journey from a curious and somewhat naïve teenager encountering computer programming for the first time at university, to a computer scientist deeply committed to human-centered and ethical approaches to technology. I believe that combining strong educational principles with responsible computing practices is essential for nurturing meaningful 21st-century skills.

My work focuses on how educational curricula can integrate the demands of a rapidly evolving digital world with human skills that foster kindness, teachability, self-confidence, communication, and collaboration. I am particularly interested in designing and influencing holistic learning models for both emerging and experienced technology professionals in Kenya and across Africa, supporting their contribution to responsible innovation.

Through KamiLimu, I lead the implementation of a structured upskilling curriculum that complements classroom learning for Kenyan university students pursuing careers in technology. In my role with the Mozilla Foundation, I support computing faculty and researchers through professional development initiatives that encourage reimagining how computer science is taught, with a strong emphasis on ethics and social impact.

Beyond my professional work, I enjoy solving complex puzzles, reading widely, and challenging myself through public speaking. I love film, hosting loved ones with my growing collection of games, and caring for plants. I recently returned to cycling, a skill I learned at the age of 21, reaffirming the simple truth that once you learn to ride a bike, you never forget.
